– For BIGBANG’s
Dome Tour you stood on stage as the opening act, what are your thoughts about
it? Taehyun: More than that, I was
really moved when I saw BIGBANG enter a big stage like a’nation and 60,000
people vibrated at the same time. I thought that I want us to stand there
someday, and when I picture the time that wish will be fulfilled, I feel a warm
glow.
Seungyoon: I’m moved to the point that I get goosebumps when BIGBANG’s fans
light up their seats like a starry sky with their yellow penlights. I wonder
what it would be like to see the seats like that from the stage ourselves
someday. When I think about it, I want us to become artists who can stand on
such a big stage soon.
Taehyun: Further, just being able to stand on a stage like a’nation is a
great honor. Our turn was around noon, but top artists enter the stage after
the sun sets, and I want us to do that, too.
– Your seniors
BIGBANG are also a group of 5. If you were to apply the members of WINNER to
BIGBANG, who would be who, or do you think you resemble them? Seunghoon: First, Minho is T.O.P. I
think he resembles him due to his charisma on stage and his funny personality. Next,
Seungyoon is V.I. He resembles him because he is able to go on stage and speak
Japanese freely and he is strong in variety.
Seungyoon: Thank you~!
Minho: Seunghoon-hyung is D’LITE.

Seunghoon: I have taste with gags, right? My Japanese is limited, but I try
my best with the vocabulary I know! (looks proud)

about G-DRAGON and SOL? Seunghoon: We don’t have them. Those
two are with BIGBANG (laughs).

So… Before your debut, you gave street gigs and split up to go sightseeing in
Japan for your TV show. Did you find a spot you like best? Seunghoon: The locations for ‘Winner
TV’ mostly were in Japan, but I liked the Tokyo Tower and Shibuya best. And I
went to Kawagoe.
Minho: Seunghoon-hyung and I went to Kawagoe together, it was great!
Seunghoon: The townscape from the past is really beautiful!
Minho: I want to go there again, if I get the chance!
Taehyun: I remember running around Shibuya. Normally, I really don’t like
moving around. I hate sweating… But that day really was fun. What else? The
bronze statue of the dog. Was it called Hachiko? I was moved seeing it, and we
went shopping a lot, and the pepper lunch was tasty.
Seungyoon&Seunghoon: It really was, right (laugh).
Jinwoo: I went to the Tokyo Tower alone, it was really strange. It was my
first time going to a place that high… (to the staff) Which floor did I go up
to? …Ah (laughs). Seems like I went all the way to the top (laughs).
Minho: You don’t remember (laughs)?
Seungyoon: (laughing so much he can’t speak)
Jinwoo: Yes (laughs). There are high buildings like that in Korea as well,
but I haven’t been there before, so since it was the first time in my life, I
was really startled!
Seungyoon: I want to take Purikura again! We have Purikura in Korea as
well, but the ones in Japan are pretty advanced and it was fun. Your eyes get
thi~s big (gesturing with his hands) and your face gets thi~s slim (gesturing
with his hands again) (laughs). I also want to eat the Ramen again we ate that
time.
– So, is there
a place you want to go again next time? Jinwoo: I have one! It’s a place
that was used in a drama… and I don’t know where it is exactly.
(everyone bursts out with laughter)
Jinwoo: Why are you laughing~? The drama is called ‘Engine’ and there’s a
place called ‘The wind hill’, do you know where it is? (He is referring to ‘The
wind hill Home’, the location is in Tokyo prefecture Machida town)
– I don’t know
either… Jinwoo: Thought so (laughs). I want
to go there.
Minho: What if it’s a set?
Jinwoo: If it’s a set… could be a set, right… Too bad.
Taehyun: You’re fast to give up (laughs)!
Minho: In my case, I don’t want to experience the big cities, but the
maniac Japan! I don’t want to visit the popular sightseeing spots, but rural
towns.
Seunghoon: (jumps on the topic) A place from Miyazaki Hayao’s works would
be great! Ah, I also want to go to the Ghibli Theme Park! A world as in ‘Sen to
Chihiro~’!
Minho: …I just want to go to a rural area. (mumbling…) The traditional Japanese
townscape in Kawagoe really left an impression. I want to go there again…
– In my
opinion, even though you’re freshmen, at your first fan meeting in Odaiba your
Japanese was really good, as well as your MC skills. How did you learn
Japanese? Seungyoon: I memorized Japanese with
drama and manga.
Seunghoon: We also studied Japanese when we were trainees. Recently, I
memorize the language while being active in Japan.
Jinwoo: It feels like naturally picking it up while coming to Japan.
Seunghoon: I have the feeling that especially giving interviews in Japanese
is of great help. If we continue coming to Japan, we should become better just
by listening.
– Were you
excited when you performed at a’nation? Minho: Not really excited, but we
had to memorize the Japanese lyrics in a haste, and I was afraid of forgetting
them on stage. But we didn’t fail~ (laughs)!
– You really
are professionals! Is there an artist you were glad to meet? Seunghoon: EXILE! Actually, I didn’t
know many Japanese artists before, but coming to Japan I took an interest, and
because EXILE are in every magazine you see in Japan…
Minho: They really are, right!
Seunghoon: That’s why I was really thrilled meeting them. Especially the
one with the perm and blond hair… (talking about Sekiguchi Mendy) He is really
tall… When I greeted him, he returned it really politely! I was so glad!
Minho: That time, Seunghoon-hyung really looked glad, right~ (laughs).
– Without being
ashamed of the name ‘WINNER’, all of you walk the path of winners, please tell
us about times you thought ‘we are really winning here and now’ or ‘if we
accomplish this, we can become true winners’. Seunghoon: I want to produce a hit song
that can stand as WINNER’s representative, like BIGBANG did! I want to release
a song loved by many, like, when you’re really sad, our song ‘Empty’ comes to
mind.
Jinwoo: Further, I want us to become known as individuals as well, not only
as a group. We have to go all in for that…
Taehyun: I’m very confident about one thing, I guess, our feelings don’t
lose to other groups. We all bring the willpower of true artists. There’s
always the creative feeling of producing something, and no matter how busy we
are, we always find the time to write songs. I think that’s the WINNER way of
growing. All the people who accomplished great things did it without giving up
on their dreams, right. That’s not an easy thing if you think about it. But all
of us are running towards their dreams, and I really think that’s cool.
– What is your
goal for your Japanese activity? Seungyoon: I want to reach number 1
in the Oricon Charts in Japan as well!
Taehyun: We aren’t Japanese, but I want us to become a group close to everyone
like the Japanese artists. Earlier, I was really glad to be told I resemble
BIGBANG’s V.I, and isn’t he good at Japanese as well? I want to speak fluently
like him.
Minho: I said you resemble Snape (laughs).
Seungyoon: I’m the one who was told to resemble V.I (laughs).
Taehyun: Won’t you give it to me?
Seungyoon: (laughing) Ok. But V.I’s comments on variety shows are really brilliant.
I just want us to be able to speak on a normal conversation level, not on his
level. V.I gives his best at studying Japanese even in Korea, and he even
researches Japanese TV shows. We should learn from him.
Taehyun: D’LITE is also good at Japanese, right. But I actually think I’m
not made for variety like V.I (laughs). I’ll leave that to Minho-hyung and
Seunghoon-hyung, I and Seungyoon-hyung should go into a more artistic direction,
I think (laughs).
Minho: What about Jinwoo-hyung (laughs)?
Jinwoo: I’ll… give my best at being everyone’s pet!

After winning YG ENTERTAINMENT’s survival project “WIN:Who Is Next” and leaving
trainee stage by reaching 6 crowns on Korean music TV shows, it’s WINNER’s
first appearance in K-BOY! We are closing in on the true faces of the guys who
made their Japanese debut on September 10th with the album ‘2014 S/S
-Japan Collection-’!

– What are your
thoughts, now that you took first place on a Korean music TV show only 5 days
after debuting, a performance unthinkable for freshmen? Minho: Truly, I didn’t even dare to
think we could take first place. I didn’t expect it. But seeing our name in the
charts right after debuting, performing on music shows, getting passionate
reactions like taking first place after not even one whole week… In whole, we
got 5 trophies for taking first place so far, and I can’t quite believe this
situation, I’m so glad that I can’t express myself properly, my head is still
basically blank.
– But, since
you’re highly expected debutants from YG ENTERTAINMENT… wasn’t that
presentiment? All: Nonono (laugh)! (all of them
wave their hands) Seungyoon: We really didn’t expect
this (laughs). Well, saying that we didn’t think about first place would be
more appropriate. I think, freshmen taking first place are really unheard of
and, because we thought it would be good to take more time and climb up the rank
little by little, first place really came out of the blue. I was really happy
about the staff being happy the moment we took first place.
– The group
name WINNER points at someone winning an audition, so what is your rival TEAM B
to you now? Seungyoon: They are our rival, but
we continue our musical exchange. We produced the main song on our album,
‘Empty’, together with TEAM B, and we always talk about music when we meet.
Now, a new audition show started for TEAM B, right? A long time ago we talked about
someday having a live together when they debut. That dream already came true in
form of a family live, but we want to give ‘WIN CONCERT’ with only us two
groups a try.
– By the way,
outfits like short pants became a topic in Korea, right? Minho: With short pants, we’re
talking about the outfit in ‘Color Ring’, right? Jinwoo: That’s Seunghoon’s outfit
(laughs)! Seunghoon: Yeah (laughs). When I
first saw that outfit, I thought ‘why does it have to be short pants?’ Jinwoo: Puhahaha. (laughs by
himself) Seunghoon: I didn’t think about my
legs as beautiful, but because our stylist didn’t stop saying ‘Seunghoon, since
your legs are beautiful I absolutely want you to wear these’, I tried them. But
in the end I had fun, I guess. Minho: They fitted you perfectly!
Because it was Seunghoon-hyung, those short pants came out great. I think, if
it had been Seungyoon wearing them, I would have thought it odd (laughs). I
admire you for wearing that outfit so well, hyung! Jinwoo: Yep, they really fitted you.
(grinning) Seungyoon: Jinwoo-hyung, you look
kind of strange.
– (laughs) The
samples from recording were played throughout the show, it was wonderful to see
you repeating over and over again. Taehyun: All of us are
perfectionists! Also, we all know that we can always do better. And, if you
repeat the same thing many times, you can slowly overcome yourself, so that
work pattern is a given. Seungyoon: Yep.
– As you
debuted in Korea and Japan at the same time, wasn’t recording really tough? Taehyun: I wasn’t too stressed out.
I don’t really feel a difference in Korean and Japanese pronunciation. In my
case, I can even sing the Japanese lyrics more smoothly. Because there are many
consonants in final position in Korean pronunciation, it often sounds cut.
There are no consonants in final position in Japanese, so I can often sing
smoothly. Of course there are also words that are difficult to pronounce, but I
didn’t feel it to be tough. Seungyoon: It’s a relieve for
singing when there are no consonants in final position. But from the
songwriting point, you have to consider whether it fits the Japanese culture or
emotions, and there are also many Korean words you can’t express in Japanese.
At first, it bothered me a bit to change such parts. Because the message I
wanted to give changes by translating… But because the person who translates
for us has more knowledge about Japan’s emotions, I totally trust them with it. Taehyun: But we are properly studying
Japanese, and I want to write lyrics in Japanese someday. Seunghoon: We have to give our best
for that (laughs).
– By the way,
if you think of your group as a family, who would take which role? Minho: Seunghoon-hyung would be the
mother! No, wait… Yeah, Seunghoon-hyung is the mother. Seungyoon would be the…
mother as well. Seungyoon: Why (laughs)? Minho: Seungyoon is the nit-picking
mother, and Seunghoon-hyung is the nice mother, who cleans up and cooks for us. Seunghoon: (in Japanese) I’m the
real mother. Minho: Jinwoo-hyung is the youngest
child!
Jinwoo: What~.
Seunghoon: Who are you then?
Minho: I am the eldest son! And Taehyun is… the pubertal daughter!
Seunghoon: Sounds like him (laughs)! Taehyun: (with a not approving look)
Daughters of marriageable age are very hard to please. So, my dear brothers,
would you do what I tell you?
All: O-oh (laugh)!
Jinwoo: What is it? Your brother will do for you whatever you ask!
Taehyun: Jinwoo-hyung was the youngest, right? Don’t speak so forwardly!
